President John Dramani Mahama has received a procurement report to begin consultancy and feasibility studies for the proposed Green Digital City project, a government initiative aimed at reducing pressure on Accra.
The President said the project has reached an advanced stage, with the next phase focusing on assessing its viability and developing the design framework for the proposed city.
Speaking during a courtesy call by the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, Members of Parliament from the region, and government appointees at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, July 21, President Mahama said the project forms part of government’s long-term plan to address challenges associated with rapid urbanisation in the capital.
“Only today I received the procurement report for the start of work for consultancy and the feasibility study for what we call the Green Digital City,” he said.
The proposed city is expected to cover land extending from the Accra Plains towards parts of the Eastern and Volta Regions.
President Mahama said the development of the Green Digital City will provide a new urban centre where some government offices and agencies can eventually be relocated from Accra.
He explained that the move is intended to ease congestion in the capital, promote planned urban expansion, and improve the distribution of economic and administrative activities across the country.
Accra has in recent years faced increasing pressure on infrastructure due to population growth, traffic congestion, housing challenges, and rising demand for public services.
The Green Digital City project is therefore being positioned as a long-term intervention to support sustainable development and create an alternative hub for government and business activities outside the current capital.
President Mahama said government will continue with the necessary planning processes to ensure the project is properly designed and implemented to meet Ghana’s future needs.
