The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has identified 73 assets linked to suspected drug traffickers as part of an intensified effort by the government to dismantle organised narcotics trafficking networks and strengthen the country’s fight against illicit drugs.
The move forms part of a broader strategy aimed at targeting the financial backbone of drug trafficking operations by tracing and confiscating assets believed to have been acquired through the illegal trade.
Speaking during an engagement with Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, said the government’s approach to combating narcotics offences has shifted significantly from focusing primarily on drug users to pursuing the criminal syndicates responsible for importing and distributing narcotics.
According to him, strengthening the operational capacity of the Narcotics Control Commission has already begun yielding positive results, enabling the agency to carry out more effective intelligence-led operations and investigations.
The Interior Minister noted that for nearly a decade, the Commission had operated without receiving new operational equipment, a situation that affected its ability to effectively execute its mandate.
However, he said the government has taken steps to reverse the trend by investing in logistics to support the agency’s operations across the country.
He explained that the provision of vehicles and other logistical support has enhanced NACOC’s ability to monitor trafficking routes, conduct surveillance operations and investigate individuals suspected of involvement in the illicit drug trade.
“For almost ten years, NACOC had not received any equipment but because of our resilience, we equipped them with almost 22 logistical vehicles and as a result, we have been able to detect 73 assets that are linked to people who are drug traffickers because we are trying to move away from simply getting those who are using or smoking narcotics to targeting those who are bringing in narcotics.
“By the grace of God and the help of the Chief Justice, we have dedicated courts to prosecute narcotics cases.”
