The Ghana Police Service has arrested 93 suspects, including persons it describes as key figures in the illicit narcotics trade, following a series of intelligence-led operations conducted across parts of the Ashanti Region.
The operation, conducted by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team (SOT) between July 15 and 24, 2026, covered Kumasi, its surrounding communities, and the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality.
In a statement issued on Monday, July 27, the Service said its teams raided several suspected criminal hideouts and drug trafficking hubs in communities including Afari, Nkawie, Ntobroso, Ahodwo, Ampabame, Atonsu Ahensan, Atonsu Gyinyase, Alabar, Asokore Mampong, Sawaba Adinyase, Buobai, Atimatim, Kronum, and Sawaba.
The 93 suspects arrested comprise 58 males and 35 females. Preliminary investigations show that 65 of them are Ghanaian nationals, while 28 are Nigerian nationals.
Among those arrested are Nurudeen Gafaru, 28; Abdul Gafaru, 29; Iddrisu Alhassan, also known as “Tagor”, 33; Akwasi Afriyie, 27; and Nigerian national Prince Chidera Okekelawe, 25.
The Police said the suspects are believed to be key players in the illicit narcotics trade within the region and are currently assisting with investigations into suspected drug trafficking and other organised criminal activities.
The operation also led to the discovery of suspected commercial sexual exploitation activities at one of the locations visited. The Police said investigations are ongoing to determine possible links to human trafficking networks, exploitation facilitators, and immigration-related offences.
Among the items retrieved were 40 compressed parcels, each weighing about one kilogram, containing substances suspected to be narcotic drugs.
The Police also seized quantities of Tramadol tablets, Ecstasy tablets, three wraps of substances suspected to be cocaine, dried leaves suspected to be narcotics, and 30 locally manufactured toffees suspected to contain narcotic substances.
Other exhibits recovered included suspected narcotic-infused beverages, narcotics processing materials, an unregistered red motorcycle allegedly used for drug distribution, and quantities of unregistered and expired pharmaceutical products.
The expired medicines included Zentel (Albendazole 200mg), Rantolidon, and Cytotec 200 microgram tablets, while unregistered pharmaceutical products recovered included Crestor 10mg tablets and PD Injection.
The Police said all 93 suspects remain in custody with the recovered items as investigations continue and the necessary legal processes are pursued.
The Service assured the public that similar intelligence-led operations would continue across the country as part of efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking, dismantle criminal networks, and enhance public safety.
