Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Ibrahim Sannie Daara believes Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has effectively ended his tenure with the national team following a social media post ;that appeared to signal his departure.
Speaking on World Cup Central on Channel One TV on Wednesday, July 8, Sannie Daara said Queiroz’s message was a clear farewell to Ghanaians and the national team.
“I think he’s gone. His statement is clear that he’s saying goodbye, he’s saying thank you, goodbye. I think it’s clear. We might not be able to read between the lines, but it’s clear,” he said.
Sannie Daara also raised concerns about the financial implications of retaining the experienced Portuguese coach on a long-term basis.
According to him, Queiroz’s reported salary demands and the cost of maintaining his technical team could make it difficult for Ghana to continue the partnership.
“He was poached for the World Cup. Would we be able to pay him? His salary is $150,000 and over. Would Ghana be able to afford $150,000 and above? And he’s bringing a large backroom staff with him. Would we be able to afford all of these things? I don’t think so,” he stated.
He argued that while top-level coaches come at a significant cost, countries aspiring to compete with the world’s best must be prepared to invest in quality technical expertise.
“Even $50,000 that some coaches were paid in the past, there was a whole hue and cry about why a coach should be paid this amount of money. But if we want to be among the big boys, we should be able to spend money. We should be able to bring the big brains. If you want to be among the top countries in the world, we should be ready to pay,” he added.
Sannie Daara’s comments follow a Facebook post by Queiroz in which he expressed gratitude to the GFA, players, technical staff and Ghanaians for their support during the team’s FIFA World Cup campaign.
The post came just days after Ghana’s Round of 32 exit from the tournament and has been widely interpreted as a farewell message.
Despite the speculation, the Ghana Football Association has stated that it has not received any formal resignation from Queiroz.
The GFA says the veteran coach remains in his position, insisting that no official communication has been made regarding his departure from the Black Stars.
