Rescue teams at Salnaayili in the Nanumba North Municipality have retrieved one more body from the Oti River following a canoe disaster that claimed six lives on the evening of Tuesday, July 8, 2026.
The latest recovery brings the number of bodies retrieved to four, with two victims — a woman and a baby — still missing.
The canoe, which was carrying seven people returning from a funeral, capsized on the Oti River near Salnaayili, resulting in the drowning of six passengers.
Three bodies were initially recovered after the incident, while rescue efforts continued for the remaining victims.
Former Assembly Member for Salnaayili, Kofi Samuel, who has been providing updates on the incident, confirmed that another body was retrieved on Wednesday evening.
He said rescue teams remain on the river as they continue the search for the two missing persons.
