The government has urged individuals, businesses and institutions to transact with UMB Bank and Prudential Bank, saying both indigenous banks are now fully recapitalised and well-positioned to support economic activity.
Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review in Parliament on Thursday, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson said the recapitalisation of the two banks marked a significant step in strengthening Ghana’s financial sector.
He said the Ghana Amalgamated Trust (GAT) had completed the full recapitalisation of UMB Bank, while the government facilitated the full recapitalisation of Prudential Bank Limited through a private sector-led approach.
“The Ghana Amalgamated Trust (GAT) completed the full recapitalisation of UMB Bank. In addition, government facilitated the full recapitalisation of Prudential Bank Limited through a private sector-led approach,” Dr. Forson told Parliament.
He added: “UMB and Prudential Bank today stand fully capitalized and primed for business. We encourage individuals, businesses and institutions to take advantage of the revitalized UMB and Prudential Bank and bank with them.”
The finance minister said the successful recapitalisation demonstrates the government’s efforts to reinforce the stability of the banking sector as part of broader measures aimed at supporting economic growth, job creation and economic transformation.
The announcement formed part of the government’s 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review, which outlined progress on reforms and interventions designed to strengthen Ghana’s economy.
