The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has called on the Ministry of Roads and Highways to establish strategic axle load control points across the region to protect newly constructed roads from premature deterioration.

He underscored the need for strict enforcement of axle load regulations which he stated is essential to preventing damage caused by overloaded vehicles, which continue to shorten the lifespan of road infrastructure across the country.

Speaking during an inspection of road projects being executed under the Big Push Programme in the Volta Region, on Thursday July 9, the Minister stressed that protecting completed roads is just as important as constructing them.

He also appealed to engineers from the Ghana Highways Authority to install properly designed speed ramps in communities along major roads to improve safety and discourage residents from constructing unauthorised ramps.

“We need to ensure that we protect the roads. We will need axle load control points at strategic locations within the region so that we can protect the roads and ensure they serve us for a very long time,” he said.
