The Director of Training for Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST), Emily Fiagbedzi, is championing the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in portraying Ghanaian culture, urging stakeholders in the literacy space to embrace this innovative approach.
Despite concerns about AI potentially displacing human jobs in the future, Emily Fiagbedzi emphasized the need to utilise AI to our advantage.
Speaking as the keynote speaker at the 21st Ghana International Book Fair, she stated, “Let us use AI to amplify diverse voices and perspectives that define Ghana’s cultural heritage and let’s reaffirm our commitment to the timeless values like creativity, resilience and the enduring power of the written word. Let’s harness AI’s transformative potential with a spirit of generosity, ensuring that Ghana’s stories continue to resonate worldwide enriching the lives of readers everywhere.”
The event, launched on Thursday, April 4 at the British Council, centred on the theme, “Book and Culture in the Era of Artificial Intelligence.”
This annual book fair brings together key stakeholders, vendors, readers, book lovers, and buyers to share a common platform with a focus on expanding and encouraging reading among the youth.
The UNESCO Country Director, Edmond Moukala N’Gouemo highlighted that a nation’s development borders on the contributions individuals can make based on the books they read.
Doubling as the Chairperson for the event, Mr N’Gueomo emphasized the importance of involving all stakeholders in ensuring that African literature remains accessible through the use of AI, thereby preventing its untimely demise.
President of the Ghana Publishers Association, Asare Konadu Yamoah, added that artificial intelligence should not be viewed as a replacement for human creativity and intelligence, but rather as a tool that enhances what can be created by humans.
Mr Yamoah further extended an invitation to all relevant stakeholders to celebrate and promote creativity at the Accra International Conference Center from August 8 to August 11.
Throughout the event, students and other attendees were observed at various stands patronizing books, while others engaged in word puzzle competitions that earned them awards, highlighting the vibrant and interactive nature of the fair.
