The Poultry Farmers Association in the Ashanti region has called on the government to ban grain exports to prevent shortages that negatively impact the poultry industry.
They are also seeking incentives for local production to prevent their businesses from collapsing due to high production costs.
During a recent inspection of chicken processing at Rockland Farm, Boris B., and Darko Farms, the Association’s chairman, Dr. Boris Baidu, commended the Food System Resilience Program (FSRP) for supporting poultry businesses.
He called on the government to invest in the industry and boost the sector.
Project Coordinator Osei Owusu Agyeman and Deputy Director Dr. Abdul Razak Okine shared insights on supporting the poultry industry and preventing food insecurity.
Mr Agyeman emphasised building sustainable businesses along the agricultural value chain to withstand shocks.
“In Agricultural Value Change, we don’t have sustainable businesses, they die and somebody revives it. A key is to make sure that at every aspect of the value chain, we build businesses that can be sustained and to be resilient enough to be able to withstand the shock.”
Dr Okine also noted that the Ministry aims to produce 18 million broiler birds this year, with the FSRP contributing two million birds. He expressed optimism about meeting targets by year-end.
“We expect that by the end of the year, what the ministry is able to produce, together with what others are providing, we’ll be able to set a target for ourselves.”
