Dr. John Osae-Kwapong, a Fellow at the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD), has called on political parties and stakeholders in the 2024 general elections to demonstrate a genuine commitment to peace through concrete actions, rather than relying solely on the symbolic signing of peace pacts.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Saturday, November 30, 2024, Dr Osae-Kwapong acknowledged the importance of peace pacts in fostering dialogue and promoting a culture of non-violence. However, he cautioned that such agreements, while critical, are not enough to ensure a tranquil electoral process.
“The signing of the peace pact, while it is extremely important, is not the only thing that gives the 100% firm assurance of peace on election day. Beyond the signing of the pact, all the stakeholders have to also exhibit the kinds of behaviours that reflect a commitment to peace.
One of the things in my view that we have to be able to manage well is our political temperament on that day,” he added.
On Thursday, November 28, the flagbearers of respective political parties and independent candidates committed and signed the peace pact for the 2024 general elections.
All the candidates pledged to commit to peace before, during and after the presidential and parliamentary election on December 7, 2024.
