The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into the damage caused to the statue of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital roundabout in Sekondi, Western Region.

On Monday, December 16, 2024, a noticeable gaping hole was discovered at the back of one of the statue’s legs. It remains unclear whether the damage was deliberate—caused by those opposed to the statue—or the result of a structural defect.

The statue was unveiled by President Nana Akufo-Addo at the entrance of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi during his tour of the region ahead of the general elections.

According to the Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, the statue was erected to honour several key projects initiated under Akufo-Addo’s administration in the region, including the rehabilitation of Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, the construction of the 3-tier Sinohydro interchange, and the Takoradi Market Circle redevelopment.

The police in a statement issued on Monday noted that preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the statue’s left leg has been damaged, and its plaque removed.

The Police added it was actively working to identify and apprehend the perpetrators responsible for this act of vandalism.

The police assured the public that efforts are underway to bring the culprits to justice and restore the statue to its original state.
