The Works and Housing Committee of Parliament, led by its Ranking Member and Dormaa West MP, Vincent Oppong Asamoah, has visited the Saglemi Affordable Housing Project to assess the extent of damage caused by a recent fire at the site.
The inspection aimed to gather firsthand information about the affected portion of the controversial housing project, which has been at the centre of national discussions due to its stalled progress.
The fire incident has added another layer of concern to the already delayed project, raising questions about its security and the state of uncompleted buildings.
The Saglemi Affordable Housing Project, initiated to address Ghana’s housing deficit, has faced numerous challenges over the years, including allegations of mismanagement and lack of funding. The committee’s visit forms part of its oversight responsibilities to ensure accountability and proper handling of public infrastructure.
The Chairman of the Works and Housing Committee in parliament, Vincent Asamoah, stated that the committee is not aware of the terms of the contract awarded to the Quarm LMI consortium by the government to complete the Saglemi Affordable Housing Project.
He passed these comments during a visit to the project site to scrutinize the aftermath of the fire outbreak that occurred at some warehouses on the project site
“With oversight over this ministry, we decided to come to the site to also have a look at items that we have lost on site. And then just after the inspection, quickly, you know there are a lot of new members on this committee so we decided to just come to the site itself so that we can also do some inspection to know if there are additional defects in the structure.
“We’ve also heard that there’s a new contractor, a new investor that the government has procured to complete this structure. Even though we don’t know the terms of the contract.
“But it’s good we are here at least to be abreast of the situation at the moment. At least once we are, we can also comment on it,” he stated.
The committee is expected to present its findings and recommendations to Parliament in the coming weeks. This will likely reignite discussions about the future of the Saglemi project and the broader issue of affordable housing in Ghana.
