Bagbin to meet Emeafa Hardcastle today

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, is scheduled to hold a crucial meeting today, January 30 with the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Petroleum Commission, Victoria Emeafa Hardcastle.

This meeting comes in the wake of a tense confrontation between Ms. Hardcastle and the Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, during a sitting of the Appointments Committee on Tuesday, January 28.

The altercation, which has since sparked debate within political and legislative circles, reportedly took place during the vetting of Dr. Omane Boamah as Defense Minister-Designate.

According to sources, an exchange of words between her and Annoh-Dompreh escalated, leading the MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri to raise concerns about what he perceives as an unjust attack on his reputation as a legislator.

Following the heated encounter, Annoh-Dompreh formally petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, urging him to intervene by issuing what he described as “consequential orders” ahead of the establishment of the Privileges Committee.

The Privileges Committee, which is responsible for investigating matters that involve misconduct or breaches of parliamentary rules, is yet to be constituted.

The Minority Chief Whip expressed deep dissatisfaction over the incident and insisted that immediate action was necessary to address what he deemed an “unprovoked attack” against him in his official capacity as a lawmaker.

In response to the concerns raised by the Minority Chief Whip, Speaker Bagbin acknowledged the gravity of the situation and assured the House that he would meet with the Acting CEO of the Petroleum Commission before the formal establishment of the Privileges Committee.

This meeting, expected to take place behind closed doors, will likely serve as an opportunity for the Speaker to hear Ms. Hardcastle’s side of the story and assess the circumstances surrounding the incident.
