The management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the largest referral medical facility in Ghana, has confirmed that its recent directive to temporarily suspend the acceptance of dead bodies and Brought-in-Dead (BID) cases at its morgue is being strictly adhered to.

The directive, which was announced on Monday, February 3, was implemented to facilitate a much-needed refurbishment of the hospital’s mortuary facilities.

The renovation, expected to span six weeks, is part of the hospital’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality of its services and address infrastructural challenges that have plagued the facility over the years.

Speaking to Citi News, sources from the hospital’s Public Relations Unit emphasied that compliance with the directive has been widespread, with both hospital staff and the general public cooperating fully with the new guidelines.

This compliance, according to the hospital’s administration, has been instrumental in ensuring that the planned refurbishment proceeds smoothly without interruptions.

The decision to temporarily halt the acceptance of fresh corpses and BID cases was necessitated by the deteriorating state of the hospital’s morgue.

Over time, the facility has faced significant infrastructural and capacity challenges, prompting management to take action to upgrade and modernize the mortuary to better serve the public.

According to hospital authorities, the planned renovations will involve a comprehensive overhaul of key sections of the mortuary, including the refrigeration systems, storage compartments, and ventilation.

The upgrade is expected to improve the efficiency of the facility, ensuring better preservation of bodies and enhancing the overall conditions within the morgue.

A senior hospital official, speaking on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the mortuary’s cooling systems had been experiencing periodic malfunctions, leading to concerns about their ability to maintain optimal temperatures for body preservation.

Given these challenges, management saw it as imperative to take decisive action by suspending operations and embarking on the much-needed refurbishment.
