The National Service Authority (NSA) has disclosed that individuals in higher authority under the Akufo-Addo tenure orchestrated the presence of ghost names.
This follows a directive from President John Dramani Mahama, who instructed the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) to probe the Authority’s operations after the discovery of more than 8,000 ghost names in the system.
Addressing the media on February 13, the Director-General of the Authority, Felix Gyamfi, assured the public of his commitment to eradicating such fraudulent activities during his tenure.
He called for a collaborative audit of the institution’s systems,
“It is a grave time for all of us, because hardly would you go anywhere without being confronted with the issue of ghost names. It is sad, there’s no doubt in anybody’s mind that the scandal started from the top of the National Service. The scandal started from there.
“There’s no way that there will be ghost names in our payroll without the connivance of the Director General and to some extent his deputies. Because the final approval of payments, the power to check whether people in certain places who are not supposed to be there can go on without the approval of the Director General.”
Mr. Gyamfi also cautioned all tertiary institutions to secure accreditation from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), warning that students from unaccredited institutions will not be permitted to undertake national service.
