Govt races against time as Mahama’s 120-day social contract nears deadline

The government is racing against time to fulfill its 120-day social contract with Ghanaians.

Tomorrow, May 7, 2025, marks exactly 120 days since President John Dramani Mahama was sworn into office, marking the deadline for fulfilling key promises outlined in the 2024 NDC Manifesto.

Nineteen promises have been fulfilled, with two in progress, while the government is yet to deliver on seven, which include a review of taxes on vehicles, Commencement of the 24-hour economy policy, a ban on illegal mining, a review of the Customs Amendment Act, 2020, and Introduction of a bill to streamline government scholarship awards.

The others are investigations aimed at purging state security agencies of vigilante elements, reopening investigations into the by-election killings.

Meanwhile, President Mahama is expected to address the nation on Wednesday, May 7, to provide an update on the progress of his administration’s 120-day contract with the people.

“On Wednesday, the President will hold a broadcast in which he will render an account for his stewardship in the last four months or 120 days. Therefore, I will urge Ghanaians to tune in and listen to the President so that they can draw their conclusion as to the level of compliance with the very promises that the President made to the people of Ghana,” he said.

Following the launch of the Code of Conduct for government appointees yesterday, the government is also set to launch a digital portal for reporting breaches of the code.

“If by close of the day, Wednesday, 7th May 2025, any of you still fails to declare your assets, count yourself automatically dismissed because when it comes to protecting the integrity of this government, I will not compromise,” he said.
