President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday, July 3, swore in seven new justices to Ghana’s Supreme Court at a ceremony held at the Jubilee House, significantly expanding the bench of the nation’s apex court.

The appointments are expected to strengthen the judiciary’s ability to handle its increasing caseload, particularly in preparation for important constitutional and electoral matters.

The swearing-in follows thorough vetting and approval by the Appointments Committee of Parliament.

The seven newly confirmed Justices include:

1.Justice Senyo Dzamefe

2. Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei

3.Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh

4. Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo

5. Justice Philip Bright Mensah

6. Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo

7. Justice Hafisata Amaleboba

President Mahama, in his address, emphasised the crucial role of the judiciary in upholding democratic governance and the rule of law.

He urged the new justices to remain steadfast in integrity, fairness, and impartiality, and reminded them of the solemn oath they had taken to serve the people of Ghana with distinction.

The new appointees, who are seasoned judges elevated from the Court of Appeal, bring decades of legal and judicial experience to the Supreme Court. Their appointments, made in accordance with Article 144 of the 1992 Constitution, followed the constitutionally mandated processes, including advice from the Judicial Council, consultation with the Council of State, and parliamentary approval.

The addition of these seven justices not only strengthens the overall composition of the court but is expected to enhance its capacity to adjudicate an expanding and complex caseload.
