The GhanaThink Foundation has announced the organisation of the 2025 edition of National Volunteer Day (NVDay) on Sunday, September 21, 2025, coinciding with Ghana’s Founder’s Day celebration.
Now in its 13th year since its launch in 2013, NVDay has grown into a flagship initiative that mobilises Ghanaians—particularly young people—to dedicate their time and skills to volunteerism. The programme is designed to inspire civic responsibility, build capacity, and foster networking opportunities while helping communities address pressing challenges.
Over the years, NVDay has made a significant impact through the Ghana Volunteer Program, which provides a platform for citizens to contribute meaningfully to national development. By encouraging volunteerism, the initiative has helped young people build skills, gain valuable experience, and enhance employability, while also promoting social cohesion.
NVDay 2025 invites individuals, organisations, and communities across Ghana and the diaspora to organise or join volunteer activities, from cleanups and educational outreaches to health drives and peace campaigns. With over 1.5 million young Ghanaians aged 15-24 neither employed nor in training, volunteering offers a vital pathway for skill-building, employability, and civic engagement.
Past editions have demonstrated profound impacts on youth, turning participants into changemakers who lead local initiatives and inspire broader societal progress. As Ato Ulzen-Appiah, Director of GhanaThink, noted in a recent reflection: “NVDay is not only set aside to help people, but also to help volunteers with building personal skills, gaining experience, networking, etc.”
Reflecting on the successes of #NVDay2024, themed around themes like #CleanAirGhana, volunteers across regions made tangible differences. In Bolgatanga, members of Bolga Konnect educated teenagers on substance abuse and teenage pregnancy at Bolga Sherigu Senior High School, promoting healthier futures for young people. In Kasoa, KasoaKonnect members engaged pupils in tree planting and gardening sessions at local schools, fostering environmental awareness among the next generation.
NortheastKonnect members partnered for a cleanup in Wungu (North East Region), contributing to cleaner communities and air quality. Beaches in Sogakope & Accra saw cleanup exercises. In Takoradi, Legends Hub organized a cleanup and peace campaign, blending environmental action with civic harmony. Sunyani saw blood donation drives supporting local hospitals, saving lives through youth-led efforts.
These activities not only addressed immediate needs but also empowered youth with leadership skills, resilience, and a sense of purpose. Hilda Adika (HohoeKonnect admin) has shared how volunteering ignited her passion: “Volunteerism isn’t just something I do – it’s a way of life for me. I’ve had the privilege of participating in and organizing various National Volunteer Day (NVDay) activities, including blood drives, clean-up exercises, and mentoring school kids. I’m excited to see what NVDay 2025 has in store, and I’m looking forward to meeting new people and supporting them in their efforts. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of putting smiles on people’s faces through simple acts of kindness. I’m eager to be part of something bigger than myself and make a positive impact in my community.” Hilda Adika is currently part of the team running the Ghana Volunteer Program.
Seyram Ahiabor is one of the passionate minds behind National Volunteer Day (#NVDay). He leads online for GhanaThink and hols a major roles with Lions & Leo Clubs in Ghana (which have organized several #NVDay activities in the past). He stated: “I have been privileged to join hands with incredible, like-minded volunteers over the years to drive meaningful impact across our communities. Through #NVDay, I’ve had the opportunity to participate in diverse activities, including painting schools, building a playground, teaching students, making donations to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, and my personal favorite — blood donation drives, which save lives and bring hope to many”. Such stories highlight how NVDay has helped youth overcome unemployment challenges, with many transitioning to formal roles or international opportunities through gained experience.
