The Energy Commission of Ghana has deepened regional cooperation on energy efficiency following a high-level meeting with a delegation from the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) in Accra.

The engagement, held on October 17, 2025, focused on sharing Ghana’s experiences in implementing its Energy Efficiency Standards and Labelling (S&L) Programme  – a key policy tool designed to promote the use of energy-efficient appliances and reduce power consumption nationwide.

The Nigerian delegation, led by Engr. Enebi Shaibu Onucheyo, Director of Product Certification and Chairman of the SON Mandatory Energy Labelling Scheme (SONMELS) Implementation Committee, is preparing to roll out Nigeria’s own Mandatory Energy Labelling Scheme for air conditioners, refrigerators, and lighting products.

Discussions between both institutions covered enforcement strategies, stakeholder engagement, and the role of regional harmonization in accelerating sustainable energy adoption.

The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to strengthening technical cooperation and promoting energy efficiency best practices within the subregion.

Assistant Director of Energy Efficiency at the Energy Commission, Mr. Kennedy Amankwa, described the collaboration as a major step toward a “unified regional approach to energy conservation and sustainable development.”
