Gov’t allocates extra GH¢100m to address grain glut

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the National Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) to purchase surplus farm produce from farmers across the country, following growing concerns over unsold crops and falling market prices.

Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, disclosed this on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, November 10, 2025, in response to widespread complaints from farmers, particularly those cultivating rice, maize, and other grains.

He explained that the President’s directive aims to cushion farmers affected by the glut and stabilise food prices.

“The National Buffer Stocks is procuring rice, maize, gari, and many other grains from the farmers,” Mr. Opoku said.

According to the minister, the government initially released GH¢100 million for the purchases, which has already been fully utilised. He said he had personally verified the quantities procured.

“As we speak, the initial GH¢100 million that the government gave to them has been fully utilized, and the quantities have been made available to me. I have gone to the stores to look at the quantities they have, and I also have the paper receipt in relation to how much they have procured,” he noted.

Mr. Opoku further revealed that the government has approved an additional GH¢100 million to enable NAFCO to continue buying directly from farmers in the field.

“Another GH¢100 million has been provided for them to go to the field to continue with the purchases,” he added.
