The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, led by Mayor Adam Abubakar Takoro, has begun the second phase of its major decongestion exercise aimed at enhancing safety and improving accessibility within the city’s Central Business District (CBD).
The latest operation targets hawkers and traders operating in unauthorised spaces, particularly along pedestrian walkways and road pavements.
This phase follows the initial exercise carried out on July 2, 2025.
According to the Assembly’s Public Relations Officer, Amadu Mustapha Zakaria, the decongestion effort is a continuous process, and the second phase is intended to consolidate the gains achieved so far.
He noted that the involvement of multiple security agencies distinguishes this phase from the earlier one, adding that the Assembly will maintain close monitoring to sustain compliance.
“Decongestion is a continuous process, so it will be erroneous for anybody to create the impression that it’s a failed attempt, for which reason we’re coming back. The first phase chalked up some successes, though it faced some challenges, which are meant to guide us. This is expected to deepen the gains nd also re-target other areas,” he said.
Mr. Zakaria further stressed that the popular “weekend market,” often held on streets and pavements within the CBD, will no longer be permitted.
