Health workers at the Akoti Health Centre in Assin Wurakese in the Assin Fosu Municipality of the Central Region are threatening to abandon post following a violent attack on a patient by some armed individuals.

The incident occurred after a violent altercation ensued between a man identified as Yaw Buabeng and a couple, during which both parties reportedly inflicted cutlass wounds on each other.

One of the victims, known as Daniel, who sustained deep wounds on his arm, was the first to arrive at the facility for urgent medical attention.

Shortly after, Yaw Buabeng, bleeding heavily from head and hand injuries, was also rushed to the centre for help.

However, as nurses began treating him, a group of about 10 young men, armed with machetes, sticks, and clubs, stormed the facility and assaulted Buabeng, beating him into a coma.

During the attack, on-duty nurses for fear of their lives completely abandoned their duties and fled the facility.

Health officials are now demanding a full-scale police investigation and the immediate arrest of the assailants. They warn that if the perpetrators are not brought to justice, they will seek transfers, citing grave security concerns at the facility.

The matter has been officially reported to the Assin Fosu District Police Command for investigation.

In response, a team of police officers led by District Commander ASP Jacob Kumdzro, alongside Assin Fosu Municipal Health Director Benjamin Amoakoh, visited the facility to assess the situation.

The staff have been reassured of their safety as a pledge to strengthen security at the centre to prevent future attacks has also been made.

The Assin Fosu Divisional Police Commander ACP Dr. Asare Nyarkoh confirmed to Citi News that the prime suspect in the initial altercation, Yaw Buabeng, is currently receiving treatment at the ST Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu under police guard.

He also disclosed that the police are working to engage community leaders and educate residents on the dangers of violence and lawlessness.
