We’ve not created enough hope with our politics, democracy – Kwabena Agyepong

A flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong, has lamented what he describes as a failure of Ghana’s political system to generate enough hope for citizens, particularly the youth, despite decades of democratic governance.

According to him, the promise of democracy has not translated into meaningful improvements in the lives of many Ghanaians.

Mr. Agyepong made the remarks on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, while presenting his six-pillar policy vision as part of his campaign ahead of the NPP’s flagbearer race.

The former General Secretary of the NPP said his six-pillar policy vision is aimed at restoring hope, improving governance outcomes, and repositioning the country on a path of inclusive and sustainable development.

“Nearly seven decades of self-rule, it is imperative to pause and reflect on the extent to which we have been able to achieve the goals we set and ask ourselves the painful question: ‘Is this it?’” he said.

He noted that while macroeconomic indicators may show progress, the lived realities of many citizens tell a different story.

“We see the numbers, but even more importantly, we see the decimal realities, especially with the frustration of the youth and the unemployed graduates who have no jobs,” he stated.

Mr. Agyepong further pointed to persistent governance and development challenges across key sectors, including education, health, infrastructure, and public administration, which he said continue to limit the ability of many citizens to reach their full potential.

“We feel it in the many manifestations of poverty that are still unacceptable in our country. Too many of our citizens are unable to achieve their potential in life due to the suboptimal systems we have,” he said.

He also described illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, as an existential threat to the country, stressing the need for decisive leadership to confront the problem.

“In summary, we have not created enough hope with our politics. Democracy has not yielded the expected dividends,” Mr. Agyepong added.
