Channel One TV’s Community Legends initiative is already gaining strong national traction, with more than 100 nominations submitted since the call for entries was opened in December, highlighting the depth of grassroots leadership and selfless service across communities in Ghana.

The initiative, launched to identify and celebrate everyday individuals making meaningful contributions to their communities, seeks to shine a spotlight on unsung heroes whose impact is often felt locally but rarely recognised publicly.

Through the project, Channel One TV aims to amplify these efforts and help scale solutions that are improving lives at the community level.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, January 21, the Head of Programmes Production at Channel One TV, Apiorkor Seyiram Ashong-Abbey, described the response so far as overwhelming, noting that the volume and quality of entries point to a strong culture of community service across the country.

According to her, some nominees have received as many as 13 separate nominations, an indication of the visible and sustained impact of their work. She explained that many of those being nominated are ordinary citizens who have identified pressing needs within their communities and taken action without waiting for government intervention or financial reward.

“These are people who are not employed by the government and are not making any profit from what they do,” she said. “They have simply seen a need among fellow Ghanaians and decided to step in to help.”

At the end of the nomination process, she said, three outstanding individuals will be selected and awarded, with additional support provided to help expand and sustain the impact of their work.

“We’ve put out a call that if you know someone like this, send us their story and tell us what they are doing. At the end of it, we will select three top people, recognise them, and support the expansion of what they are doing,” she stated.

With nominations continuing to come in, Channel One TV says the Community Legends project is expected to not only celebrate local heroes but also inspire others to take action, reinforcing the idea that meaningful change often begins at the community level.
