Mfantsipim School is set to officially launch its 150th anniversary celebrations, marking what organisers describe as 150 years of secondary education in Ghana.

Established in 1876, the school is widely recognised as the first secondary school in the country and has, over the decades, built a strong legacy of academic excellence, leadership and service.

The celebration, themed “A Legacy of Excellence, Leadership and Service to Inspire the Future,” will run from March to November this year.

Speaking at a pre-launch press briefing in Accra, John Yamoah, Chairman of the 150th Anniversary Planning Committee, said the milestone extends beyond a school anniversary.

“This sesquicentennial is more than a school anniversary; it is a national celebration of 150 years of secondary education in Ghana. Indeed, it is a moment of joy and excitement for the country. For over a century and a half, Mfantsipim has shaped generations of leaders, statesmen, professionals, academics, and sportsmen who have served Ghana and the world with distinction,” he stated.

Capt. Yamoah disclosed that central to the celebrations are legacy projects aimed at improving infrastructure and preserving the school’s heritage.

“Central to this celebration is a legacy project which includes upgrading residential and academic facilities, supporting STEM and digital learning, enhancing sports infrastructure, establishing a historical museum to showcase 150 years of Mfantsipim archives and heritage, and erecting a monument for the Mfantsipim @150 celebration,” he added.

Also addressing the gathering, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, commended the school for its contribution to secondary education in the country.

“Mfantsipim stands as a beacon of excellence and a model for secondary education in Ghana. For 150 years, it has nurtured generations of Ghanaians who have served the country and the world in various capacities. Its values, achievements, and enduring legacy provide a lens through which we can assess the journey of secondary education in Ghana,” he noted.

Planned activities for the anniversary include a lecture series, homecoming events, community outreach programmes, sporting activities, awards and a grand durbar.

The official launch of the anniversary is scheduled for April 11, 2026, at the Accra International Conference Centre, marking the beginning of the year-long celebrations.
