The Gbese District Court has dismissed a preliminary objection filed by lawyers for Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica against extradition proceedings initiated by the United States.
Abu Trica is wanted by U.S. authorities over allegations of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. The request forms part of ongoing international efforts to prosecute alleged transnational financial crimes.
His legal team, led by Oliver Barker-Vormawor, challenged the legal basis of the extradition process. The defence argued that the offences cited by the United States are not covered under the 1931 extradition treaty between Ghana and the U.S.
Counsel further contended that neither wire fraud nor money laundering is explicitly listed as an extraditable offence under the treaty, and that Ghana cannot rely on more recent domestic laws to expand its scope.
They also maintained that the treaty’s provisions on conspiracy do not apply to the charges in question.
However, the court dismissed the objection, effectively allowing the extradition proceedings to proceed.
