President John Dramani Mahama has cut the sod for the construction of a 24-hour multipurpose market in Bimbilla in the Northern Region.
The project, to be executed by Yaape Doo Company Limited, is expected to be completed within two years. The market is being constructed in the Nanumba North Municipality.
The sod-cutting ceremony formed part of President Mahama’s Resetting Ghana Tour of the Northern Region.
Addressing the gathering on Saturday, April 18, the President said the initiative fulfils the National Democratic Congress’ 2024 campaign promise to stimulate economic activity across markets in the country.
“Each of the 261 districts will receive a 24-hour market. Bimbilla will be one of the largest model markets. You will have ten warehouses. This market will improve economic activities and linkages between our households and farms,” he stated.
He urged the contractor to ensure high-quality work, stressing the importance of proper maintenance upon completion.
The 24-hour market concept is expected to be replicated across all 261 metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies nationwide, with facilities tailored to support traders, particularly market women.
The markets will be equipped with essential amenities such as cold storage facilities, fire posts, schools, police stations, clinics, pharmacies, banks, an information centre, restaurants, lorry terminals, shops and shopping malls to enhance commercial activities.
Meanwhile, a town hall meeting is scheduled for Sunday, April 19, at the University of Development Studies in Tamale, where government appointees are expected to outline key interventions implemented over the past year.
