The Paramount Chief of Sankana, Naa Pagraninge Sankoe Monah, has called for the adoption of modern and sustainable farming methods in the area, stressing that improving agricultural practices is key to boosting food production and livelihoods.
He made the call at the Sankana Kalibi Ganlaa Festival while renewing appeals for urgent government intervention to rehabilitate the Sankana Dam, warning that the facility remains critical to supporting irrigation and sustainable agriculture in the community.
According to him, the introduction of practices such as aquaculture and improved irrigation systems could transform farming in the area and make it more resilient and productive.
“We would like to propose to the Ministry of Agriculture the introduction of modern and sustainable agricultural practices like aquaculture to boost productivity. The facility will also serve as training grounds for agricultural science students from our technical universities and secondary schools,” he said.
The chief noted that efforts to upgrade the dam have stalled despite earlier assurances, recalling that funding was reportedly secured in 2018 to dredge and improve the irrigation system, a project that has yet to materialise.
He warned that without urgent intervention, the situation could undermine efforts to promote sustainable agriculture in the area.
Beyond agriculture, Naa Pagraninge Sankoe Monah also called for improvements in healthcare infrastructure, urging authorities to upgrade the local CHPS compound into a polyclinic to better serve the growing population.
