The Ministry of the Interior has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a statutory public holiday to mark May Day, also known as Workers’ Day.
In a statement issued on April 27, 2026, and signed by the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Ministry urged the public to observe the day nationwide.
“The general public is hereby informed that Friday, May 1, 2026, marks Workers’ Day (May Day), which is a statutory public holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement said.
May Day is observed globally in recognition of the contributions of workers to national development. In Ghana, the day is typically marked with parades, addresses by labour leaders and government officials, as well as discussions on workers’ welfare.
The occasion also serves as a platform for organised labour to engage the government on key issues, including wages, job security, and workplace safety.
