Ashanti Region: Several phone shops destroyed by fire at Adum

Several phone and accessories shops have been destroyed in a devastating fire that gutted a number of stores and a warehouse at Adum in the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, May 5.

According to some traders, the fire is believed to have started at the Pat Thomas Phone Shop and an adjoining accessories shop before spreading rapidly to nearby structures.

They suspect the blaze may have been triggered by an erratic power supply, noting that electricity had been fluctuating intermittently in the area earlier in the morning.

The fire is said to have started around 6:00 a.m.

Eyewitnesses reported that the unstable power supply persisted for some time before smoke was seen billowing from the building.

Two fire tenders were deployed to the scene, with firefighters battling the blaze for hours to prevent it from spreading to adjoining buildings.

Shop owners nearby were seen frantically removing their wares in an attempt to salvage what they could.

Some traders broke down in tears as goods they had stocked for months were consumed by the fire.

Security agencies, including the police and officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), were present to maintain order and begin assessing the extent of the damage.

No casualties have been reported.

The Ghana National Fire Service is yet to determine the exact cause of the fire.

However, affected traders are calling on the Electricity Company of Ghana to address the unstable power supply in the area to help prevent future incidents.
