Bodyguards of Adwoa Safo’s brother arrested over alleged shooting incident

Six bodyguards of Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, a younger brother of former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo, have reportedly been arrested following a shooting incident that left the former legislator injured.

A source familiar with the incident told Citi News that police officers picked up the bodyguards on Sunday after the alleged shooting.

“I don’t really remember the time, but it was around nine thereabouts. Some of the bodyguards from his brother’s house, from Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena’s house, have been arrested. The police just took them away. At the moment, we haven’t heard anything further and are waiting for the police to come up with something,” the source said.

The source reiterated that Adwoa Safo was shot in front of her brother’s residence but indicated that her injuries were not life-threatening.

According to the source, the former MP was in a vehicle when the gunshots were fired.

“She is very okay. She is at the hospital. The injury is not too serious, but an injury is an injury. She was in the car when she was shot,” the source stated.

The source further claimed that the weapon used appeared to be a pump-action gun, causing pellets to spread and inflict injuries around her upper body.

“Some of the pellets caused injuries under her neck and on her chest. There was blood on her face because she had been shot and was bleeding before she was rushed to the hospital,” the source added.

Adwoa Safo is currently receiving treatment and is said to be in stable condition.

The incident is reported to have occurred amid tensions surrounding an ongoing succession dispute within the Kristo Asafo movement following the death of its founder, Apostle Kwadwo Safo.

The succession process has reportedly sparked disagreements within the Kristo Asafo family, with some relatives challenging attempts to elevate Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena to the leadership of the organisation.

The Ghana Police Service is yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Investigations are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the arrests.
