Political analyst Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere has described Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s decision to appoint his former competitors in the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearership race to co-chair key policy committees as a “massive stroke” that could strengthen party unity.
The appointments saw Kennedy Ohene Agyapong named to the Employment and Jobs Policy Committee, Kwabena Agyapong to the Housing and Urban Development Policy Committee, Bryan Acheampong to the Defence and Interior Policy Committee, and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum to the Education Policy Committee.
Speaking on Citi FM’s News Digest on Saturday, May 9, Mr. Otchere said the move was a strategic one that could help consolidate support within the party and aid its internal mobilisation efforts.
According to him, bringing former rivals into key decision-making structures sends a strong signal of inclusiveness and cohesion within the NPP.
He noted that beyond promoting unity, the appointments also place the appointees in areas aligned with their expertise, making the move beneficial to the party’s policy direction.
“It is quite strategic. If only these colleagues have accepted these appointments, I think it is a massive stroke. Once you have been able to get them on board, their grassroots support will definitely be on his side,” he said.
He added that the appointments also carry significant political symbolism.
“It is good for the optics. The optics is that it creates a semblance of unity,” he stated.
The appointments are widely seen as part of efforts by Dr. Bawumia to strengthen internal collaboration and build consensus within the NPP ahead of future political contests.
