The People’s National Party (PNP) has cautioned that Ghana cannot meaningfully celebrate Mother’s Day while the girl child continues to suffer sexual abuse, defilement and neglect, describing the situation as a growing national crisis requiring urgent intervention.

In a statement signed by Janet Asana Nabla, Chairperson and Leader of the People’s National Party and issued on May 10, 2026, the party said the abuse of young girls by trusted individuals, including family members, is destroying the future of potential mothers and must no longer be treated as a private family matter.

The PNP’s concerns follow a radio discussion on Adom FM, where a mother recounted a disturbing case involving her daughter who was allegedly defiled between the ages of 10 and 14 by her father, a police officer.

The woman claimed the abuse resulted in two abortions and HIV infection, and raised concerns about delays in securing justice despite reporting the matter.

Describing the case as heartbreaking, the party said it reflects deeper institutional failures and called for stronger accountability in the justice system, particularly in handling defilement and child protection cases.

The PNP is urging parents and guardians to remain vigilant and pay attention to warning signs of abuse, stressing that perpetrators are often individuals within the victim’s close circle, including relatives and trusted acquaintances.

It also called on key institutions, including the Ghana Police Service’s Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, religious bodies, schools, traditional authorities and the media to intensify public education and awareness campaigns on child protection.

According to the party, sustained national education is critical to ensuring that victims know where to report abuse and receive proper support.

The statement concluded that Ghana risks undermining its future if it fails to protect its girls, adding that silence and inaction around defilement cases must end.

“You cannot celebrate mothers while upcoming mothers are being destroyed in silence,” the statement said.
