The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has attributed persistent water supply challenges in parts of the Greater Accra Region to major leakages along transmission lines linking the Kpong Water Treatment Plant to the Tema Booster Station.

According to the company, the leakages are causing the loss of nearly 40 per cent of treated water, resulting in significant revenue losses and disruptions in supply to communities such as Prampram, Gbetsile, Afienya, and surrounding areas.

Speaking to journalists after an inspection tour on Monday, May 11, the Managing Director of GWL, Adam Mutawakilu, disclosed that the company has begun efforts to replace ageing pipelines that have been in use for about 70 years.

He explained that investigations identified the transmission lines from Kpong to the Tema Booster Station as a major source of water losses, particularly affecting operations in the Tema and Accra West regions.

“The three lines from Kpong to Tema Booster is where we have issues. When we assessed the regional non-revenue water, Tema and Accra West recorded very high losses,” he said.

He noted that one of the main transmission lines, a 21-inch metal pipeline, has developed several leakages over the years, worsening water losses in the area.

Mr Mutawakilu said the GWL Central Workshop has since been directed to fabricate new 25-inch and 42-inch transmission pipelines to replace the weak sections of the old infrastructure.

“Since March, we instructed the central workshop to fabricate the 25-inch and the 42-inch pipes for us to replace all the weak points,” he added.
