Northern Ashanti Mines Company Limited, a wholly Ghanaian owned mining company has assured stakeholders of its continued commitment to responsible mining, community development, and environmental sustainability following an incident involving illegal miners on its concession at Konongo in the Ashanti Region.

According to the company, nine illegal miners were recently trapped in one of the old mine shafts on the concession, leading to a near-fatal incident. Management clarified that the affected individuals were not employees of the company but persons engaged in unlawful mining activities within the concession area.

In a statement, the company said the matter has been reported to the Police and other security agencies for investigations and to help prevent future occurrences.

Northern Ashanti Mines Company Limited, which operates under the Minerals and Mining Act 2006 (Act 703), stated that it continues to operate within all regulatory requirements and remains committed to lawful and sustainable mining practices.

The company further disclosed that it is collaborating with the Police, Military, Municipal Security Council (MUSEC), Regional Security Council (REGSEC), and traditional authorities to decommission and remove all illegal mining equipment and machinery from its concession.

Management issued a strong caution to illegal miners and persons seeking to trespass on the company’s concession to desist from such activities, warning that abandoned mine shafts and unauthorized operations pose significant risks to lives and property.

Northern Ashanti Mines also reaffirmed its long-term commitment to the socio-economic development of communities within the Asante-Akim Central Municipality through responsible investment and sustainable mining operations.

The company revealed that construction of a new processing plant is currently underway and expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2026 ahead of full-scale mining operations.

According to management, more than $23 million, representing over 85 percent of the current phase of the project, has already been invested.

The broader redevelopment project, which includes the reconstruction of the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF), Water Treatment Plant, and other ancillary infrastructure, is expected to cost approximately $43 million.

Management emphasized that the company is positioning itself as a modern Ghanaian-owned mining firm anchored on strong Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles, local participation, and strict compliance with local content regulations in the Ashanti Region
