The government has announced a special support package for Ghanaians expected to return home following their evacuation from South Africa amid ongoing xenophobic attacks.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who said the package is aimed at supporting the reintegration and welfare of all evacuees upon their arrival in Ghana.

According to the minister, the package includes a “Welcome Home Financial Package,” transportation assistance to various destinations across the country, and a reintegration allowance to help returnees resettle.

He further explained that evacuees will also benefit from free psychosocial support services to help them cope with trauma linked to the attacks and displacement.

In addition, the returnees will be enrolled in a special database designed to connect them with job opportunities and support for potential start-ups in Ghana.

The intervention follows rising concerns over xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, which has heightened fears among African migrants, including Ghanaians.

The government said the measures are part of efforts to ensure the safe reintegration of affected citizens and to reaffirm its commitment to the welfare of Ghanaians abroad.

“We value and cherish all our citizens,” the minister stated.

The evacuation comes amid increased diplomatic engagement over the safety of Ghanaians living in South Africa in recent weeks.
