The government has expressed sympathy to victims affected by recent flooding in Accra and other parts of the country, reaffirming its commitment to addressing the perennial challenge.
In a statement issued on June 6 by the Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, the government acknowledged the significant impact of the floods, which have damaged homes, businesses and public infrastructure while disrupting economic and social activities.
The minister extended sympathies to individuals and families who have lost property, livelihoods and other valuable possessions as a result of the heavy rains experienced in recent days.
According to the statement, while climate change and increasing rainfall intensity continue to strain urban infrastructure, human activities remain a major contributor to flooding.
The government cited indiscriminate waste disposal, construction on waterways and wetlands, and non-compliance with planning regulations as key factors worsening the situation.
The statement referenced recent remarks by President Mahama, who noted that Ghana’s flooding challenges are largely exacerbated by indiscipline in human settlement and environmental management.
The government said emergency response measures have been activated through the Ghana Hydrological Authority, NADMO, metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies, security agencies and other stakeholders.
These interventions include the deployment of emergency response teams, provision of relief items to affected households, assessment of damaged infrastructure and intensified desilting activities in flood-prone communities.
The ministry also outlined long-term measures aimed at reducing flood risks, including drainage improvement projects, rehabilitation of stormwater infrastructure, enforcement of development controls, restoration of wetlands and implementation of early warning systems.
