Three individuals have been arrested by a special police operations team in Winneba in the Effutu Municipality of the Central Region for engaging in illegal mining activities.
The arrest followed a complaint by the Central Regional Directorate of the Ghana Water Limited (GWL) that illegal mining activities were being conducted along its main lines in Winneba.
A team of officers drawn from the Central Regional Police Command embarked on an early morning raid at the site, leading to the arrest of “Eugene Oppong, age 28, Paul Kumasah, age 30, and Amos Beyuo, age 25
were arrested at the mining site,” according to police.
The police, in a statement, said several other “illegal miners, sighting the police, took to their heels and left their equipment behind.
“19 water pumping machines with water holes, 4 washing carpets, 7 cutlasses, and a wheelbarrow were retrieved from the site, and other equipment that could not be removed from the illegal mining site was immobilised and set ablaze.”
The suspects are in police custody assisting investigations are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
