Akosombo substation incident: Responsible persons will face law – Jinapor

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has assured Ghanaians that individuals found responsible for the recent incident at the Akosombo GRIDCo substation will be held accountable in accordance with the law.

According to the Minister, while the efforts of engineers and technical personnel in restoring power supply following the incident deserve commendation, any findings of negligence or misconduct will not be overlooked.

Jinapor made the remarks after receiving the report of an investigative committee tasked with examining the circumstances surrounding the incident at the Akosombo substation and recommending measures to prevent a recurrence.

The report was formally presented to the Ministry by the Chairperson of the Investigative Committee, Ing. William Amuna, who outlined the committee’s findings and recommendations.

During the presentation, Ing. Amuna indicated that one of the key recommendations emerging from the investigation is the establishment of an additional control centre to strengthen the country’s power transmission management system and provide greater operational resilience.

Responding to the report, Jinapor assured the committee and the public that the government is committed to implementing the recommendations put forward.

He noted that the Ministry would take immediate steps to evaluate the feasibility of establishing a new GRIDCo control centre as part of broader efforts to strengthen the nation’s energy infrastructure.

“The engineers did a good job in restoring power but that is not to say that if somebody is found culpable, that person will not be held to account. That is the call to duty. This will serve as a lesson.

“Already, based on the briefing we got from you along the line, we have taken some action and we have gotten them to be a bit more proactive. This is a lesson that should teach us to avoid the future occurrence of this very unfortunate situation.”
