Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), averted a potential fire disaster after a tanker carrying diesel was involved in a three-vehicle collision at Konongo Lady Diana in the Ashanti Region, leaving five people injured, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said.
The accident involved a MAN diesel tanker, a DAF XF truck, and a Toyota Matiz taxi.
Although no fatalities were recorded, the collision caused extensive damage to all three vehicles and raised the risk of a major fire and environmental hazard.
“The crew successfully salvaged 54,000 litres of diesel from the tanker, averting a potential fire using foam concentrate and preventing an environmental hazard,” the GNFS said.
A rescue team from the Konongo Fire Station, led by Leading Fireman Siale Richard, responded after receiving a distress call at 3:36 p.m. and arrived at the scene 12 minutes later.
Five people — three men and two women — sustained injuries in the crash. Four victims were rescued before firefighters arrived and taken to Steward Hospital, while the fire crew rescued one additional victim and conveyed the person to the same hospital in a police pickup vehicle.
Preliminary reports indicate that the three vehicles collided, although the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
The diesel tanker sustained severe damage to its cowl, the DAF XF truck suffered partial damage, and the Toyota Matiz taxi was completely wrecked.
The GNFS expressed appreciation to officers of the Konongo Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) for helping secure the scene and manage traffic during the rescue operation.
The firefighting crew returned to the station at 6:01 p.m. after successfully managing the incident.
