The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the late Ambassador James Victor Gbeho will be honoured during activities marking Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary in 2027.

Leading a delegation from the Ministry to condole with the family on Monday, June 22, the Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, described the former diplomat as an outstanding statesman whose contribution to Ghana’s foreign service and international reputation will not be forgotten.

He praised the family of Victor Gbeho for their contribution to Ghana’s history through the distinguished service and legacy of the late diplomat.

“We cannot talk about the history of our country without your family. So you should be very proud of what your family has contributed to what Ghana is today. And as we mark the 70th anniversary of our independence in a few months from now, March 6, next year [2027], we will certainly have a special place for your family,” he told the family.

He said one of the enduring lessons many diplomats learnt from Ambassador Gbeho was the importance of leaving a meaningful legacy through public service and professional excellence.

“He is one whom I can spend the whole day celebrating, extolling his virtues, and really commending him for the towering work that he did to advance our foreign policies, our diplomatic relations and engagement in various corridors.

“I believe that his legacy will live on. He served with integrity. Not once was there any controversy. He will be fondly remembered. His good deeds will live after him,” he remarked.

The veteran diplomat, aged 91, passed away at a hospital on Saturday, June 13, 2026. However, the cause of his death has not yet been disclosed.

Born on January 12, 1935, in Keta in the Volta Region, Ambassador Gbeho celebrated his 91st birthday earlier this year. His death marks the loss of one of Ghana’s most experienced diplomats, whose influence extended beyond the country’s borders.

Over the course of his public service career, Ambassador Gbeho occupied several high-profile positions, including serving as Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs between 1997 and 2001 during the administration of former President Jerry John Rawlings.
