Koforidua: Man arrested for attempting to steal GWL stop cock

A 24-year-old man, identified as De-Graft Addison, a native of Cape Coast, has been arrested in Koforidua in the Eastern Region for allegedly attempting to steal a Ghana Water Limited (GWL) customer’s stop cock.

The incident occurred last week near the tennis court area, where the suspect was reportedly found digging around a water meter on a private compound.

According to the customer, who had briefly returned home, he met Addison on the compound and questioned his presence. The suspect allegedly claimed he was planting a coconut seedling.

Sensing foul play, the homeowner confronted and detained him before handing him over to the Adweso Police to assist with investigations.

There have been increasing reports across Koforidua Metropolis and surrounding communities of theft involving GWL meters, stop cocks, and other water fittings. Some of the suspects are believed to pose as scrap dealers while targeting utility installations.

Speaking on the development, the Eastern Regional Chief Manager of Ghana Water Limited, Ing. Gideon Anor Asare, expressed concern over the rising incidents, describing them as a major financial burden on the company.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious individuals, noting that the theft of water infrastructure continues to drain the company’s resources and disrupt service delivery in affected areas.
