Three people have been confirmed dead, while three others, including a baby, remain missing after a canoe carrying mourners capsized on the River Oti at Salnaayili in the Nanumba North Municipality of the Northern Region.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 7, when eight people, made up of five women and a man, were returning from a funeral and attempted to cross the river in a canoe.
Speaking to Citi News, former Assembly Member for the Salnaayili Electoral Area, Kofi Samuel, indicated that two of the women were carrying babies at the time of the incident, and the occupants were not wearing life jackets when the canoe overturned midway through the journey.
One woman is said to have survived after swimming to safety with her baby, while the other six occupants were thrown into the river.
Rescue teams have so far retrieved three bodies, with three others, including a baby, still unaccounted for.
Local fishermen have since joined the search efforts to locate the missing victims.
