The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Asokore Mampong, Ben Abdullah Alhassan, has warned that shop owners who fail to take part in the sanitation exercise and clean their surroundings will face prosecution.
The warning follows what he described as poor participation by some residents and traders, despite widespread compliance with the directive to keep shops closed during the exercise.
Speaking to Citi News during the exercise, he expressed disappointment that many shop owners remained indoors while refuse accumulated around their business premises.
According to the MCE, the objective of the government’s sanitation initiative was not only to shut businesses but to encourage residents to actively clean their communities.
“Regrettably, residents are staying indoors. You can see that all the containers have been locked, but they are not stepping out to help in the exercise,” he said.
Alhassan said the assembly had tasked its media team to capture video and photographic evidence of businesses that remained closed but failed to participate in the clean-up.
He added that some shop owners had left heaps of refuse around their containers despite being expected to maintain clean surroundings
The MCE warned that the assembly would begin prosecuting offenders from Monday as part of efforts to enforce sanitation regulations in the municipality.
“Even if you’re not helping in the general exercise, at least step out and collect the heaps of refuse that you yourself have gathered in between your containers. But that is also not happening,” he added.
