Zoomlion Ghana Limited has opened five waste transfer stations in Accra to receive waste generated during the two-day nationwide clean-up exercise announced by President John Dramani Mahama.
The exercise, which began on Friday, July 10, 2026, follows the June 29 floods that affected parts of Accra and other communities across the country, leaving behind large amounts of debris and waste.
The Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Jospong Group, Sophia Kudjordji, said the transfer stations would help manage the expected surge in waste collection during and after the exercise.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Friday, July 10, she explained that the facilities would serve as temporary collection points where waste could be compacted before being transported to final disposal sites.
She noted that although waste is normally sent directly to landfill sites, the limited availability of disposal facilities has made transfer stations necessary.
“Under normal circumstances, they should have been taken to the landfill sites. Today, in Accra, the closest landfill site is in the Eastern Region, at a place called Adepa,” she said.
The five transfer stations are located at Achimota, Teshie, Mallam, Ashaiman, and Abokobi.
According to Kudjordji, waste collected during the exercise would be sent to these stations, while some would also be transported to the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant for sorting and processing.
“All the waste will be going there. Some will also be sent to the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant, where the sorting and others start immediately,” she stated.
She explained that the transfer stations would improve efficiency by allowing waste trucks to quickly offload their contents and return to collection points instead of making longer trips to disposal sites.
“When you send it to the transfer site, what it does is that it is then compacted and moved, so you can get more waste,” she added.
Kudjordji urged individuals, local authorities, and waste management companies participating in the clean-up exercise to send collected waste to the designated transfer stations to reduce pressure on existing disposal facilities.
