The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), in collaboration with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), will on Monday, July 20, 2026, commence a major three-month project to upgrade the Kumasi-Anwomaso transmission line.
The intervention is expected to result in temporary power outages across Kumasi and its surrounding communities throughout the construction period.
The 1,000-megawatt upgrade is designed to nearly triple the transmission line’s current capacity of 364 megawatts, with the aim of meeting Kumasi’s rapidly growing industrial and residential electricity demand while significantly improving the reliability of the power grid.
Speaking during an inspection of the project site, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, appealed to residents to bear with the utility providers, warning that any further delay in undertaking the upgrade could result in a total collapse of the grid.
Dr. Jinapor explained that although the project would cause temporary inconvenience, it cannot be postponed indefinitely as it is critical to securing the energy future of the Ashanti Regional capital.
He appealed to the public to remain patient as engineers undertake the critical safety and capacity upgrade.
“We cannot postpone this forever. ECG recently undertook some major works, and the people of Kumasi have seen significant improvements in the reliability of the electricity supply. If we fail to carry out these further improvements, we risk a collapse of the entire grid. We are appealing to residents to bear with us. We will undertake the work in a systematic and planned manner.
Where it becomes necessary to temporarily interrupt power supply in some areas, the utility providers will communicate that ahead of time.”he said.
The Minister also expressed concern over the continuous encroachment on the Ghana Grid Company Limited’s right-of-way, describing it as a major challenge to the company’s efforts to ensure a stable electricity supply.
To avoid demolishing properties and paying huge compensation to affected property owners, Dr. Jinapor said engineers will dismantle the existing transmission line and construct the new one within the existing right-of-way.
As part of the exercise, GRIDCo will also use the three-month period to upgrade transformers at the Ahodwo Substation, which supplies electricity to Kumasi’s central business district and surrounding residential communities.
Chief Executive Officer of GRIDCo, Frank Otchere, explained that as the transmission line’s capacity increases, the substation’s capacity must also be upgraded to handle the additional power.
