Chereponi Traditional Council fights inclusion in North Eastern Region

The Chereponi Traditional Council in the Northern Region has kicked against the proposal to include the area in the proposed North Eastern Region.

The proposed region is meant to include the districts in the Mamprugu Traditional Area, if the petition for the new territory is eventually approved.

According to the Chereponi Traditional Council, the attempt to include the area in the proposed North Eastern Region will not be considered.

In an address at his palace, the Regent of Chereponi, Jaminja Malba Yombu served notice that they will not be coerced to accept the proposal to be part of the proposed North Eastern Region.

He said Chereponi will be better off maintaining its status quo as an embodiment of the Dagbon Traditional Area and is not interested in the proposed creation of new regions.

“We have maintained our position that we are not against the creation but we want to be part of Northern Region where we pay allegiance to. Our chief is being enskinned by the overlord of Dagbon, the Yaa-Naa and he attends Northern Regional House of Chiefs meetings,” he said

Jaminja Malba Yombu nonetheless commended the Mamprugu Traditional Area for articulating their demands but emphasized that Chereponi should be left alone.

“Chereponi can’t be part of the North Eastern Region and attend the Northern Regional House of Chiefs meetings. It is a recipe for confusion and we don’t want any conflict in future because we have had a healthy relationship with the Mamprusis for a while,” he said.

He downplayed the public hearings of the Commission of Inquiry into the proposed new regions in Tamale saying, “we suspect the recently selected few people to be part of the regional reorganization commission forum in Tamale was stage-managed and those who posed themselves as representing the chief of Cheriponi have no authority to do so.”

The Mamprugu Traditional Council and the Gonjaland Traditional Council have petitioned and appeared before the Commission of Inquiry overseeing the creation of the new regions.

They are demanding the creation of two additional regions to be known as the North Eastern Region and the Savannah Region.
