Anti-LGBT bill to be laid before Parliament by March ending after AG’s blessings – Sam George

The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram and a proponent of the anti-LGBT bill, Samuel Nartey George says the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee is expected to lay its report before the house by the end of March this year.

This follows an approval of the bill by the Attorney General in its current form after the committee took his concerns regarding the bill into consideration.

In an early opinion to the Chairman of the Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs of Parliament, the Attorney General stressed that the bill will face some challenges when implemented, adding that some provisions in the bill will violate some fundamental human rights and freedoms, particularly the right to privacy.

But addressing the media after a meeting by the Committee with the Attorney General on Wednesday, February, 22, Sam George said a consensus has been reached on the bill hence the need for it to be laid in the House before the House goes on recess.

Mr. Sam George told the parliamentary press corps that “the Attorney-General’s memo agrees with more than 85 percent with the bill. The Attorney General raised some fundamental issues on cost and on some human rights issues, and we drew his attention that most of the issues he was raising were issues that had already been looked at.”

He further disclosed that the Attorney General and the Committee had reached a consensus and that he had actually applauded the Committee on the work done which is devoid of human rights violations.

“There was consensus and agreement amongst all of us and I asked him [the Attorney General] a specific question, and he answered, I asked him if he thought that the bill infringed on any human rights in Ghana and he said he did not see any infringement on human right in the bill and that he actually supports the bill as it stands.”
