Prioritize patients safety to prevent medical legal actions

Medical supervisors within the Catholic Health Services Trust are strongly advised to prioritize patient safety to prevent future medical-legal issues that the trust has been grappling with.

They are entrusted with the responsibility of adhering to healthcare standards in the care of patients, aiming to curtail unnecessary medical-legal expenses borne by the trust.

Mr. George Adjei, Director of the Catholic Health Service Trust, delivered this message during the 18th annual conference of the trust held in Tamale.

Discussing the triggers of these issues, Dr. Adjei highlighted patient care errors, often stemming from doctors’ illegible handwriting, resulting in misinterpreted prescriptions and other complications during the delivery of healthcare.

During the conference, the keynote speaker, Most Reverend Peter Paul Yelezuome Angkyier, Bishop for the Damongo Diocese, emphasized that all health facilities under the trust must promptly incorporate the term “Catholic” into their respective names by the end of 2025.

The directive must be adhered to by all member institutions of the Catholic Health Services Trust by the end of 2025.

Bishop Angkyier explained that this policy decision is a response to the increasing use of names of saints by private institutions, which may cause confusion among regulators and patients.

Even names like “Madonna” are now being used, further underscoring the need to protect the Catholic identity of the trust’s facilities.
