In fulfilment of government’s campaign promise of One Village One Dam, the Bongo District Assembly in the Upper East Region has cut the sod for the construction of eight dams located in eight communities of the district.
The district submitted 15 communities for consideration, but only eight has been approved for construction.
The construction of the dams, when completed, will afford beneficiary communities to crop all year round.
Speaking to Citi News at the sod cutting ceremony at Kuyelingu in the Atampiisi electoral area, District Chief Executive for Bongo, Peter Ayinbisa, said the construction of the dams was in fulfillment of government’s promise.
Mr. Ayinbisa was hopeful that, the remaining seven (7) communities whose proposed dams haven’t been approved yet, would be considered for approval and construction.
“The construction of these dams and subsequent usage of the dams will facilitate government’s quest to reduce poverty in the district since community members seeking greener pastures in the South will now go into dry season farming and all year round farming. This will not only improve their incomes but also their livelihood. We cannot eliminate poverty completely but we can reduce it drastically and these dams when completed will do just that”.
The 1V1D policy is a government initiative to construct dams in all communities within the three regions of the North to promote agriculture.
The Paramount Chief of the Bongo traditional area, Bonaba Baba Salifu Alemyarum, commended the initiative.
He stated that the dams when completed will help reduce poverty in the area particularly dry season farming and all-year round cropping.
